"Who is an Artist in AI Era?" (Chapter 2 of Artificial Aesthetics by Lev Manovich and Emanuele Arielli.) ### Abstract In today's digital age, the concept of what it means to be an artist is undergoing significant change. With artificial intelligence (AI) now capable of producing art that can stand alongside human-created works, we are faced with rethinking our understanding of creativity and authorship. In this chapter I examine how AI's growing abilities challenge traditional views suggesting that we might need a new kind of Turing Test—one that evaluates creativity. Notably, experiments like Michael Noll's 1966 study showed that people sometimes preferred computer-generated art to human-made pieces, highlighting AI's potential to capture aesthetic value. The use of digital tools like Photoshop and Blender, which incorporate AI, has already blurred the lines between human and machine creativity. Artists today often rely on these technologies, complicating the notion of who—or what—is the true creator. Traditional ways of judging art, such as through formal training or critical praise, now coexist with digital-age measures like social media popularity, where artists can achieve recognition without traditional credentials. The chapter argues that for AI to truly contribute to art, it needs to learn the creative process, not just the end product. This approach could lead AI to become a genuine creative force, evolving from a mere tool into a collaborator. As AI becomes more integrated into artistic practices, our understanding of what makes someone an artist is changing, opening up exciting new possibilities for creativity in the digital era.
